ANXIETY
Assignments:
1. Icebreaker Speech: Bring in one item that helps to describe who you are or your interests. This is designed to assist the class (and me) in getting to know you. (2-4 min.)
2. Demonstration Speech: Explain and show an audience how to actually do a procedure. Each speaker must use a visual aid(s). (5-6 min.)
3. Informative Speech: You will deliver an informative speech to deepen understanding, raise awareness, or increase knowledge about a topic. What do you think your audience should learn about (it should be timely and “news” to them)? Use a clear thesis, two or three main points, and evidence as support (you should cite at least 3 sources in your actual speech). Each speaker must integrate technology (PowerPoint, ActivInspire, Keynote) for this presentation (5-6 min.)
4. Persuasive Speech: You will try to persuade the audience to change, instill, or intensify an attitude, value, belief, or behavior. You should make ample use of evidence ( at least 4 sources cited in your speech) and other methods of persuasive appeal. Try to focus on an issue that your audience can actually do something about. Incorporate strategies that will involve your audience and make them feel the topic is important to them. Also use at least ONE visual aid. (7-8 min.)
5. Graded Impromptu: Choose two topics from a bag of topics and select one topic to speak on. After a 2-min. preparation time, present a speech on the chosen topic. Grade is based on effort to apply concepts such as signposting, transitions, introduction/body/conclusion, avoiding filler words, etc. We will be practicing these speeches over the course of the semester. (1-2 min.)
6. Occasional Speech: Occasional speeches are addresses of praise or celebration. They pay tribute to a person, group of people, an institution or an idea (eulogies, best man/maid of honor, Fourth of July speeches, testimonial addresses, dedications, etc.). You will be writing and delivering a Graduation Commencement Speech (or another event pending instructor approval). (4-5) min.)
